Himalayan Griffon Rescue & Rehabilitation Programme in Bangladesh

Insight into the Movement Pattern of Rescued Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis) from Bangladesh through Satellite Tracking

The Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis) is a large scavenger that migrates annually from the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayan mountains to Bangladesh during winter.
Each year, approximately 100-150 individuals arrive, many weakened by long-distance flight, food shortages, and harsh weather. Since 2014, IUCN Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Forest Department have collaborated to rescue and rehabilitate nearly 300 vultures through a targeted care program.

Between 2023 and 2025, nine vultures were fitted with GPS transmitters to track their migratory routes, revealing extensive cross-border movements. This work underscores the critical need for transboundary conservation efforts to safeguard these vultures and maintain regional ecological balance.
