WHY WE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC
it was not a decision we took lightly...
There were a number of factors that influenced our decision. Covid hit us badly as it did many zoos, then add in Avian Influenza which, with a zoo dedicated to just birds, was a huge problem. We still have to be very careful in that respect.
The infrastructure of the Centre was aging and out of date both in design and materials and we really needed to spend a considerable sum of funds to rebuild almost every aspect of the place. The needs of visitors have also changed and became more demanding, and our location has never been that easy for people to find us or drive here up what is a narrow road and these days full of potholes. So as we did not have the funds required to do a proper job of upgrading everything to the standard that we wanted, and spending what would have been millions of pounds in a location that has become more and more unsuitable, we decided to close the public side of things and move to the other work that we have done quietly for years.
We now just hold some specific birds for conservation breeding, and just me and one member of staff to care for them and encourage them to breed. We instead put all our resources into practical conservation without having to be worried about getting enough visitors and making sure they have a good time, no longer worrying about the weather on Bank Holidays, or getting tasks done before we open, as well having to care for, clean and feed a significant number of birds.
We do currently have a number of projects that we are involved in both nationally and internationally and as always, we rely on funding to enable us to continue the work that we do. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated – it all adds up.
YOU CAN HELP
None of the above would be possible without the help and support of others. You can make a difference and help us to help them. Whatever you can afford is much appreciated.
We are eternally grateful for those who leave a legacy to the ICBP, as they make a huge difference to our conservation work. For further information please contact us
